What is Dance Movement Therapy? What is Dance Movement Therapy?

The use of movement as a medium through which the individual can engage creatively in a process of personal integration and growth. (ADMP UK)

Dance Movement Therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement. It is based on the idea that our emotions are experienced in our body as well as in the mind. Movement is both a practical and creative means to access personal material that can be explored through physical activities and verbal reflection. Movement becomes a symbolic or metaphoric tool to express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to describe through words alone. In order to benefit from Dance Movement Therapy, one does not need previous experience with dance or movement.

Therapy Programs

Group sessions are approximately an hour in length. Individual sessions are an hour and fifteen minutes. A sliding scale for fees is available.

Movement Psychotherapy – Individual sessions for adults

Individual, movement based psychotherapy will be helpful for adults wanting to improve their emotional and mental health through expansion of their personal resources. This type of psychotherapy can be useful in helping people further develop the connection between their physical, cognitive and emotional selves. Personal challenges are identified and resolved that may be difficult to describe through words alone. Movement in combination with verbal reflection leads to new insights and perspectives. No particular movement technique must be learned. The process consists of exploring movement potential and body focused exercises while tracking thoughts and responses. This may lead to greater awareness of the self and ease of being in the body. Adults experiencing anxiety, depression, dissatisfaction with certain aspects of life, effects of stress, lack of confidence and motivation, unresolved inner conflicts and overwhelming feelings can benefit. Movement psychotherapy may also improve physical health, but this is not the main objective.

A complimentary trial session is offered.
